High School Subjects Needed To Study Digital Marketing In South Africa

There are no required subjects to be able to study Digital Marketing in South Africa. There are some recommended subjects, such as Business Studies, because they will be helpful. However, they are not compulsory. 

Some useful subjects are:

  • Maths or Maths Literacy
  • Economics 
  • Business Studies

English is an excellent subject to have for Digital Marketing. Because most of your marketing will be posted to social media platforms and other online platforms, it is helpful to have good grammar and spelling to optimise your posts. 

Maths or Maths Literacy are useful in terms of data analytics. You will use tools such as Google Analytics to keep track of the reach and popularity of your posts. You will then need to use these statistics to optimise your posts and grow the business. 

Economics is a great subject to have because you can study the financial growth of the company. This is a useful tool for projecting future growth and using these to promote your business at the optimal times in the economy. 

Business Studies is a great subject for learning many skills. This subject covers many useful topics, such as finances, operations management, entrepreneurship, and human resource management. These are all great skills to have to optimise your business. 

Does Digital Marketing Require Maths?

No, Digital Marketing does not require Maths. You do need to have basic maths skills, but you can have Maths Literacy and study Digital Marketing.

No, you do not need a Degree to become a Digital Marketer. However, when you look for jobs for a Digital Marketer, most will list a Bachelor’s Degree as a requirement along with experience and other things. 

The best way to be able to become a Digital Marketer without getting a Degree is to apply for an internship with a company that offers internships to people without Degrees. 

How Long Does It Take To Be A Digital Marketer?

This depends on what marketing qualification you study. If you are studying for a Bachelor’s Degree, it will take a minimum of four years to complete your degree. However, if you study for a Diploma, it can take between one and three years to complete, depending on where you study. 

How Can I Start Digital Marketing?

You can start your journey to your Digital Marketing career with a NATED Marketing Management course, or you can choose to study a Short Course in Marketing Management. 

NATED Courses

NATED courses are designed by the Department of Higher Education and Training, and are accredited by QCTO (the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations). This means that they are recognised as formal qualifications in South Africa. 

NATED qualifications take three years to complete. This consists of 18 months of theory study followed by 18 months of practical study. 

NATED courses have three levels of theory study, which each take six months to complete. This is then followed by 18 months of work experience, which counts as the practical side of the qualification. 

You will apply to be placed at a business or company relevant to your stream of study through iWIL, a free placement service. Note that you do not automatically gain a placement. Your work hours and progress will be tracked, and then the records will be submitted for review before you can get your Diploma.

The short courses offered at Skills Academy are provider programmes which are open-access. Open-access means that there are only two requirements you have to meet to be able to apply, which are: 

  1. You must be over the age of 16
  2. You must be able to understand, read and write in English
