Study Top Business Management Courses: Why Open Learning Is the Smart Choice in 2026

Whether you’re looking to climb the corporate ladder, launch your own venture, or simply build a stronger foundation in the business world, pursuing a business management qualification has never been more accessible. Open learning — studying at your own pace, on your own schedule — has become the preferred route for thousands of working South Africans who want to grow professionally without putting their lives on hold.

The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) offers a fully accredited Business Management programme that takes you from foundational skills all the way to advanced financial management, with nationally recognised qualifications at every level.

About the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB)

The ICB has roots going back to 1931, making it one of South Africa’s most established academic bodies in the financial and business education space. In 2015, the historic ICB was formally divided into two distinct bodies:

  • The ICB (academic body) — exclusively responsible for education, training, and qualifications.
  • The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers and Accountants (ICBA) — the professional membership body, recognised by SAQA for registering seven professional designations on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

The ICB is a recognised Quality Assurance Partner of FASSET — the Sector Education and Training Authority for Finance, Accounting, Management Consulting, and other Financial Services. FASSET itself falls under the QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations), which oversees the SETA landscape in South Africa. Both FASSET and the QCTO are statutory bodies established by Acts of Parliament.

Under this structure, the ICB is responsible for quality control, assessments, and the integrity of a range of qualifications — ensuring that what you earn means something to employers both locally and internationally.

What Your ICB Qualification Can Open Up Next

Completing an ICB Business Management qualification isn’t just an endpoint — it’s a launching pad.

Further study with CIMA and ACCA: The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) — both internationally respected UK-headquartered bodies — grant exemptions to ICB graduates. Holding the National Diploma: Financial Accounting (NQF 6) can earn you up to six exemptions from both CIMA and ACCA, fast-tracking your path to international accounting designations.

Chartered Secretaries Southern Africa (CGISA): Grants exemptions for certain ICB subjects toward qualifications in corporate governance.

Professional membership: Once you’ve completed your studies, you can apply to join the ICBA at the appropriate membership level based on your qualification and work experience. The ICBA recognises ICB qualifications as well as other SAQA-registered qualifications, including foreign qualifications evaluated by SAQA. Tax practitioners can also apply to join SAIT using certain ICB qualifications.

Career connections: Through its partnership with leading South African job portals, the ICB connects graduates with financial and administrative positions across the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each ICB subject is assessed across two components: your Portfolio of Evidence (PoE), which contributes 30% of your final mark, and your summative final exam, which contributes the remaining 70%. You must achieve at least 50% in the final exam to pass, regardless of your PoE mark — so consistent effort throughout your studies is essential.

Your PoE is a personalised folder provided to you after you register for an assessment. It contains your ICB Administration Guide, assignments, tests, and response books. Distance learning students receive their PoE directly; classroom students receive it through their college. You’ll complete and submit your PoE at your final exam. Expect your PoE to arrive 3–4 weeks after your exam entry is processed.

Distance learning students can sit ICB exams in February, May, July, September, and November at ICB-approved assessment centres across southern Africa. Classroom-based students should check their college’s internal exam schedule.

Don’t panic — you have options. If you’re assessed as “not yet competent,” you can write one re-assessment (a summative final exam only, no PoE required, with a pass mark of 60%). This must be completed within 12 months of your original exam date. If you miss the re-assessment or don’t pass it, you’ll need to re-enrol for the subject from the beginning with a new PoE.

Classroom students register through their college. Distance learning students register via the ICB Student Portal online. Select your qualification and subjects, choose your exam dates and venue, and submit your entry along with the required fee. Always register as early as possible — your PoE can’t be sent until your exam entry is confirmed.

Yes. If you need to postpone, check the ICB Assessment Timetable for the applicable deadlines and submit your postponement request along with the required fee before the cut-off date. If you’re ill on exam day, you may apply for a free medical postponement — a doctor’s certificate is required, and approval is at the ICB’s discretion. Each subject’s assessment can only be postponed once.

Results are released approximately seven weeks after your exam. Distance learning students can access results via the Student Portal and will also receive them by email.

Yes. All ICB qualifications are registered on South Africa’s National Qualifications Framework (NQF) by SAQA. ICB graduates are recognised by several international professional bodies, including CIMA and ACCA. Employers in both the private and public sectors value ICB-qualified candidates.

Absolutely — that’s one of the programme’s greatest strengths. Open learning means you set your study pace within the course structure. Many ICB students are employed full-time while completing their qualifications.
