About the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers

The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) is a recognised professional body established in 1931. In South Africa, the ICB’s academic division is an acknowledged Quality Assurance Partner of FASSET (the Sector Education and Training Authority for Funding, Accounting, Management Consulting and Financial Services).

In 2015, the original ICB separated into two bodies: a Professional Body (the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers and Accountants – ICBA) and an Academic Body (the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers). The academic ICB is responsible for quality control and examinations of nationally and internationally recognised qualifications.

The QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) currently manages the oversight of all SETAs, including FASSET, to ensure consistent quality and compliance with national education standards.

How ICB Assessment Works

Your learning is structured through three phases, each containing assignments and online tests, culminating in a final examination. Your grade is calculated as follows:

  • 30% – Continuous assessment (assignments and tests) through your Digital Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) on MACCI
  • 70% – Final examination (online or paper-based)

You must achieve at least 60% on the final exam to pass, regardless of your overall mark. The continuous assessment is designed to prepare you for the final exam and provides evidence of your learning progress.

Digital Portfolio of Evidence and MACCI Platform

All learning assessments and assignments are managed through MACCI, the ICB’s digital platform. Your Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) is created online on MACCI once your exam booking and payment are processed. This modern platform streamlines your learning and makes study materials easily accessible.

For each subject, you will complete:

  • 3 Assignments – to help assess your understanding throughout the course
  • 2 Tests – formative assessments to measure your progress

Exam Dates and Assessment Schedules

ICB exams are held throughout the year, with increased flexibility for both classroom and distance learning students. Exams can be taken online or on paper at accredited assessment centres across South Africa.

Distance learning and self-study students can enter ICB exams in February, May, July, September, and November at authorised assessment centres. Classroom students typically sit exams on-site at their training centres.

What If You Don’t Pass on Your First Attempt?

Don’t worry if you don’t pass on the first attempt. You’re eligible for a re-assessment, which is a summative final exam with a pass mark of 60%. You must complete your re-assessment within 12 months of your original exam date.

If you don’t pass the re-assessment or miss the 12-month deadline, you’ll need to re-enter for the subject and complete a new PoE.

Medical Postponements and Exam Support

If you’re ill on exam day, you can apply for a medical postponement by submitting a physician’s certificate. This postponement is granted at the ICB’s discretion and is provided free of charge.

The ICB provides excellent student support rated 4.9/5 on Google Reviews, with responsive customer service to assist you throughout your studies.

When You Receive Your Results and Certificates

Results are released approximately 7 weeks after your exam. Distance learning students can access results on the ICB Student Portal, and results will also be emailed to you.

Upon successful completion of your studies, you’ll receive:

  • Professional Certificate – for each subject you complete
  • ICB/IQB Qualification Certificate – upon completing your full qualification (nationally and internationally recognised)
  • FASSET NQF Qualification Certificate – for students enrolled on the NQF pathway before 30 June 2026 (final completion deadline: 30 June 2029)

Career Support and Professional Development

The ICB supports your career journey beyond your qualification. You gain access to:

  • Career tips and job search resources
  • Professional development webinars and training
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities
  • Job matching services in partnership with CareerJunction (South Africa’s major job site)
  • Networking opportunities with other professionals

Professional Membership Opportunities

Upon completing an ICB qualification, you can apply for professional membership with bodies such as:

  • ICBA (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers and Accountants) – the sister organisation of the ICB
  • SAIT (South African Institute of Tax Practitioners) – for tax practitioner registration
  • CIBA (Chartered Institute of Business Accountants)
  • International bodies such as ACCA and CIMA (with study exemptions)
  • IAAP UK and IAB UK (international administrative and business associations)

Your ICB qualifications may grant you exemptions or credit towards further studies with internationally recognised accounting and administrative bodies, allowing you to progress towards advanced international certifications.

Study Further with Credit for Your ICB Qualification

You may be eligible for study credit with international bodies such as ACCA and CIMA. For example, ICB graduates holding the National Diploma: Financial Accounting (NQF Level 6) may receive up to 6 exemptions from CIMA or ACCA. Those with an NQF Level 5 Office Administration qualification may receive up to 2 exemptions from CIMA, allowing you to progress towards becoming a Chartered Certified Accountant.

Study Options: Flexibility to Fit Your Life

The ICB offers multiple ways to study:

  • Self-Study – Study at your own pace with purchased learning materials from accredited providers
  • Classroom-Based Training – Attend classes at an accredited ICB training centre with instructor support
  • Online Learning – Study through an accredited training centre via distance learning or online classes

Whether you’re a working adult, school leaver, entrepreneur, or seeking professional development, you can choose the study format and pace that works for your situation. Many students combine study with full-time employment through evening, weekend, or online options.

Getting Started: Registration and Enrolment

All students – whether studying independently or with a training centre – must register on the ICB Student Portal. Initial registration is free, but an annual registration fee applies when you book your first exam.

For self-study students, you’ll need to purchase approved learning materials from accredited educational providers such as EDGE Education. For training centre students, your provider supplies all materials.

Once you’ve prepared, you’ll book your exam through the Student Portal, pay the examination fee, and your Digital PoE will be created on MACCI.
